Signs of Breast Implants complications

Breast augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures and most women will not experience any complications, but it is possible, and it is important to know the signs so you that can receive the correct treatment in time.

After any surgery, including breast implant, there can be complications these include risk of infection, excessive bleeding and reactions to medications.

These problems are easily detected and should show signs immediately following your procedure. Infection may occur up to six weeks following surgery and symptoms include pain around the incision area or discomfort, excessive heat and swelling in the breasts. If you have any of these symptoms you should contact your surgeon immediately.

Other symptoms of breast augmentation include capsular contracture - when scar tissue compresses your implant - and the possibility of asymmetry – when breast implants appear misshapen or uneven.

Another risk of breast implants is the possibility of rupture, where the silicone in the implants leaks into the body, which has been associated with increased risk of cancer. This is a serious risk and was highlighted recently with the PIP implants, these implants are expected to have a higher risk of rupture due to the industrial grade silicone being used in them.

Due to this increased risk by the use of industrial grade silicone in these implants and the fact that some of the clinics who used these implants are now no longer in business or have not provided appropriate after care to patients the Irish government has decided to pay for the removal of these implants for patients affected.
