How Breast Enlargement Surgery has Improved over the Years

The art and science of breast enlargement and enhancement has improved considerably over the past several years.

Modern silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. They feel very similar to natural breasts and they do not usually cause visible rippling. Even though silicone implants look and feel better, women are still anxious about their safety record so it is important to get the facts straight.

There are two main differences between the silicone implant of today and the original silicone implants.

Firstly, the covering or shell is much stronger and therefore much less likely to leak.

Secondly, the gel inside is no longer a liquid. All the silicone implants we use contain a cohesive gel which has the consistency of ‘Turkish Delight’. Even if the covering ruptures this gel should not leak out. It was claimed that silicone in the body might cause disease. This has been completely disproved by numerous studies comparing women with silicone implants with women with no implants at all.

From the development of the first breast implants in 1962, the most common complication associated with breast enlargement surgery is that of Capsular Contraction. This is where the bodies membrane, which grows around all implants and which normally you can’t see or feel, behaves like “shrink-wrap”, compressing the implant causing it to feel firm or hard, sometimes painful and often distorting its shape. Capsular contraction was very common (40-60%) with early smooth walled breast implants.

Developments in implants such as the production of Polyurethane Implants reduced the occurrence of Capsular Contracture down to 1-3%, a significant reduction. Textured silicone implants were developed in the late 1980’s to mimic the Polyurethane foam surface. The Polyurethane foam surface helps break up this membrane and has been shown to reduce capsular contraction to very low levels. Many studies indicate that the capsular contraction rates as low as 1% over 18 years.

Choosing the right implant is a key to successful breast enlargement or breast enhancement surgery. Because body type and breast goals are personal from woman to woman, it is important you choose implants under the guidance of an experienced plastic surgeon.

It is imperative that patients make sure they are getting the right plastic surgeon to perform any operation, your health and the outcome of your surgery is the most important factor of all – not the cost.
